6 Incredible Mountain Bike Trips in Cusco

LARES MTB TRAIL

Lares is located in the Sacred Valley of the Inca, and it’s one of Haku’s favorite mountain biking trails in the Cusco area. The shuttle ride is about 1.5 hours to the trailhead. On our way we often stop at the Calca market to pick up bread and fruit for the local kids of the high Andean pueblos. This mtb trail is littered with alpacas and llamas. It also happens to be an ancient old Inca Trail. We will do a minimal amount of pedaling as this is almost all downhill mountain biking. Our Peru  mountain bike tour will take you down more than 4000 ft of descent! This trail has everything from rock gardens to Incan stair sets with switchbacks and even what we call Inca flow. Inca flow is a short section of flow combined with quick tech sections!

Ability level: Intermediate tech

Intermediate riders will find this trail challenging and may have to walk some sections where intermediate tech riders will enjoy each new tech section thrown at them. Advanced riders will be able to find all kinds of natural hits to play on, such as wall rides, little jibs and small drops. This trail is not for beginners.

Type of Trail: Downhill Enduro Singletrack Trail

Time to trailhead: 1.5 hours from Cusco.

Lares Inca trail ride data:

RADAR MTB TRAIL

The Radar mountain biking trail in the South Valley of Cusco is a Haku Expeditions original! Now, it’s one of the crown jewels of the Cusco mountain biking community. You’ll ride along a breathtaking, towering ridge at over 14,000 ft/4,468m before dropping into the South Valley on 11 miles/18 km of high-speed Inca flow singletrack.

From there we will load up the bikes and either head to the next trail or eat lunch.

Our second ride may be the same length as the first one or a bit shorter depending on what trails have been chosen. We will arrive back in Cusco between 4-6pm.

This Peru mountain bike tour leaves from Cusco and returns to Cusco. Please make sure you are in Cusco for this ride.

We ask that you come to the shop in the Cusco historical city center at 8 am. There we will fit you to your bike and get you into the correctly sized gear. A taxi from anywhere in the city center will run you about 4-6 soles. You can walk from most places in the city in about 10-25 minutes.

The trip will end at our shop where we will then say goodbye.

If you are in the Sacred Valley please talk with us about what options you have for an epic full day ride!

Please bring your passport or a copy for us if you have not already sent it online.
Bring your balance of the trip in cash. We will not accept credit cards at the office. Please see our Money Matters tab to understand why.

  • A water bottle as we will give you refills
  • A small pack to carry your snacks, rain jacket, etc…
  • Flat bottom shoes to ride in, we do have 510’s for rent in some sizes
    eye protection and sunscreen
  • An extra set of clothes as you may get wet
  • Rain jacket

Our lunches are are generally in local restaurants. The food here in Peru is often local produce with farm raised trout or free range chicken or beef. Most lunches are a large healthy bowl of soup, a main plate of rice, potatoes, veggies and meat, chicken or fish. Our food is very healthy here!
If you have dietary restrictions please let us know in advance so we can accommodate you.

We highly recommend each person to have a specific travel/trip insurance outside of your credit card or regular medical insurance. You should get comprehensive coverage with trip interruption/cancelation and with personal liability. Mention all activities that you will be involved in such as mountain biking and whatever other activities you may have planned.

We do not provide refunds. Because mountain biking is an adventure activity and getting hurt is a possibility, you’ll want a travel insurance. If you should get hurt, not only will it cover your medical expenses, it will also cover the lost portion of the trip. Make sure you have trip interruption or trip cancelation included! South America is famous for people striking and shutting down all activities. If you miss your Machu Picchu trip, your Amazon trip or your flight due to strikes the insurance will cover the loss or additional costs that are incurred.

Peru’s currency is called the Nuevo Sol. You’ll be able to exchange US currency for the Sol easily in Cusco. The exchange rate often fluxuates between 3.29-3.33 sol per US dollar.

We recommend you bring cash. Peru is still a cash society. Most people don’t have bank accounts as Peruvian banks charge up to $15 per month just to have the account open. So, services like Venmo, Pay-Pal, and Apple Pay aren’t used here. Most local stores, taxis, and local restaurants are cash only.

ATMs charge around $8 to take out $60-200. Banks only allow a small withdrawal daily. Thus, it’s probably a good idea to withdraw a good sum of cash before you come to Peru. The USD, EURO, CAD cash you bring should be non-ripped bills. Small rips or bills that are written on are not accepted for exchange.

Seeing as Peru is a cash society and it is difficult to withdraw large amounts of cash, we require your balance be brought in cash, for the simple reason that we, too, must pay the people we employ and whose services we use in cash as well.

TIPPING: Local restaurants generally do not require a tip, however, leaving a few soles is a nice gesture. Tourist restaurants are generally a 10% tip.

Tipping your guide in Peru is generally 5-10% of the price you paid for the tour. If you would like to tip your driver for the day, a 10-20 soles tip would be a nice gesture.

You will receive an email asking for some information about your height, your diet restrictions and a few other details. Please get back to us as soon as possible so that we reserve the right size bike for you.

Make sure to buy yourself a trip/travel insurance. They are generally very inexpensive and cover your entire trip. Seeing as you have probably spent lots of money on your Peru tour you will want to make sure it is covered should you miss any of it!

All of our deposits are non-refundable. If you are booking a trip during the rainy season there is a chance you may get wet. We do not cancel for rain unless there have been landslides or something to close the trail. In the case that we cancel the trip we will refund you 100%.

If you are booking for a full day ride and the two person minimum has not been met:

You can choose to do a half day ride for 180$, pay a single supplement of $50 USD or cancel for a full refund. You will be asked which of these options you prefer during the booking process. Please choose one, so we can plan accordingly.

Our singletrack mountain biking day trips in Cusco and the Sacred Valley are shuttle assisted rides. We do not do any pedaling or uphill climbing. Check out the descent vs the ascent on the data section. Most trails will be pretty technical compared to many parts of the world. These trails are foot trails, animal trails and Inca Trails. They are not maintained mtb flow trails! We ask you to make sure you have the ability to ride these trails before booking. You need an intermediate background or higher. For intermediate riders you may walk some sections as we do have some gnarly stair sections.

Haku Expeditions is renowned for the uniqueness of our rides and treks, our award-winning service, the unbeatable value of our trips, and our refusal to cut corners. But you don’t have to just take our word for it — check out our five-star rating and hundreds of “excellent” reviews on TripAdvisor, or pro freeride MTB Hall of Famer Brett Tippie’s review of a Haku biking trip on Instagram (@bretttippie).

Seeing this iconic 15th century Incan citadel is a more than worthy bucket list item for most people that come to Peru. If you’d like, we’ll organize a Machu Picchu tour of the site that includes a round-trip train ticket, entrance to the sanctuary, and an English-speaking guide.

Archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as a palace for the Incan emperor Pachacuti in the 15th century. They abandoned it after roughly a century during the Spanish conquest, only to remain virtually unknown until 1911, when American historian Hiram Bingham made Machu Picchu’s existence public. In 1983, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and since then it has captured the imagination and awe of the millions of people who travel to experience its magic.

Price: $350 per person (Normally $389 pp when purchased separately)

Included:

  • Entrance into Machu Picchu
  • Round-trip train ticket on Peru rail
  • An English-speaking guide
  • Two-hour Machu Picchu tour

Fitness & skill level

Is this Cusco Mountain Biking Day Trip For You?

Part of making sure your Cusco mountain bike ride is perfect is honestly assessing your ability level. Cusco hosts some of the most amazing terrain in Peru. However, it is quite technical. These trails are raw, unmaintained and have extremely long descents. While the level to ride these trails is mostly intermediate tech to advanced, we are willing to take out intermediate mountain bikers so long as you know your limits and walk any section you are not comfortable with.

Our Cusco Mountain Biking Day Trip is an ideal fit for you if:

  • You’ve got experience riding on singletrack trails of all sorts with features such as rock gardens, steep sections, rolls or small drops, roots, and small jumps.
  • You are confident on the bike in most situations
  • You’re constantly looking to improve your riding skills and enjoy riding for extended periods of time climbing and descending in terrain of all sorts.
